Tips for teaching GCSE English for the first time
No matter your previous experience, teaching English GCSE is a completely different ballgame. It requires a deep understanding of the subject and how to support learners in reaching the required standards.
To get started, begin by knowing your content. Research the curriculum and review any sample papers and model answers that are available. If you are teaching a particular text, familiarise yourself with it, and ensure that you are up-to-date with the relevant changes in the subject specs.
Next, think about what strategies and resources you will be using to support your learners. Consider what techniques work best for each student. For example, some learners may respond best to visual resources, while others could benefit from audio or written tasks. Create a plan for how you can effectively use each of these resources to ensure that all learners are able to gain understanding of the subject material.
Thirdly, understand the assessment criteria and what is required for students to achieve top marks. Are there any particular criteria that you need to be aware of? Do this so you can plan lessons accordingly and teach your learners the skills they need to be successful.
Finally, remember that teaching GCSE English can be challenging but incredibly rewarding. Cater to all of your learners needs and adapt teaching styles accordingly, while also providing an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in the subject material. Your students will thank you for it!
Good luck with teaching English GCSE!
